＜Mika Tajima - New Human>
黒い磁性流体がアルゴリズムによって動き続ける「New Humans」は新種の生命体を実験用のシャーレのなかで覗き込むような不思議な視覚体験を提示する。これらの、時にかすかな、しかしたゆむことなくうつろい続けるイメージは、物体ではなく現象としてのアートにより強い関心を寄せる田島の作品世界の特徴を示すものであり、彼女の今後の展開を予見させるものとしても注目に値するものとなろう。

Emergent gatherings of synthetic humans rise from the liquid surface of a black monolith. Appearing to morph like a supernatural life form, these dynamic clusters of magnetic ferrofluid liquid produced by machine learning processes are images of communities of synthesized people modeled from actual DNA, fitness, and dating profile data sets sourced from public and leaked caches. The algorithm identifies affinities amongst these new human profiles and visualizes contingent communities forming and dissolving without convergence.


＜Mika Tajima - Negative Entropy＞
Negative Entropy (ネガティヴエントロピー)とは物理学の用語で、エネルギーや力を蓄え保持している状態(の量)やその度合いを示すもの。
自然の摂理として、存在するものは誕生と同時に劣化、老化を進行させていくが、(これを物理学では、Positive Entropy ポジティヴエントロピーと呼ぶ)、それに対してNegative Entropy は、活動のエネルギーを維持し、コントロールする力である。
田島美加の「ネガティブエントロピー」シリーズは、繊維工場やデータセンターで発生する機械作業音等をデジタルデータに変換し、そのデータを構図に用いてジャガード織へと変容させた作品。作品裏面には吸音材が貼られている。
本作品においては、一本一本の糸はひとりひとりの人間を象徴し、それらの個人が集まって社会を構成する様がテキスタイルとして表現されているとみることも可能であろう。Negative Entropy シリーズは、人間とテクノロジーの共存のあり方を主題に多様な素材を用いた制作を続ける田島の代表的なシリーズである。

Negative Entropy is a series of abstract woven portraits. These works are simultaneously images and material records of their own production. The subjects are aging factories using industrial textile Jacquard looms (a precursor to digital technology) and server colocation centers that comprise today’s cloud computing infrastructure.  
Mika Tajima recorded production sounds at several locations. The recordings were then transmuted into digital image files, and then physically translated by a weaving designer into a Jacquard fabric. The final woven textiles were stretched over custom acoustic panels to function as sound deadening tiles, the same type used in recording studios to isolate sounds made by individual performers.  The looms inscribe their own death, producing a mute visualization of vacant factories and the ascendant industry of immaterial abstractions.


＜Mika Tajima - Art d’ Ameublement＞
田島美加が想像のなかで思い描いた場所のイメージを、色彩によって抽象的に表現した本作品は、蓋状のアクリル製の支持体を制作しその裏面から絵具を吹きつけて完成する。場所を選ぶ際の条件は、田島が未だ訪れたことのない、そして誰にとってもアクセスが困難な孤立した場所であることとされ、その地名は作品の副題に暗号のように添えられる。
シリーズ全体に冠せられた「Art d’ Ameublement 家具のアート」という言葉は、作曲家エリック・サティがかつて語った「La musique d’Ameublement 家具の音楽」という言葉がもとになっているという。生活のなかに無意識に溶け込む居心地の良い家具のような音楽を目指したサティ。田島の本シリーズは色の和音ともいうべき表現で、鑑賞者の様々な解釈を許容する「場所」を作り出し、その居心地の良さのなかにたたえられた幻想の齟齬や差異そしてそれらを超えてあるべき調和を問いかける。

“Art d’Ameublement” series are consisted of spray enameled transparent ambient paintings each subtitled by a geographic location, such as Osaka, Medellín, etc., drawing on the specific psycho geographic associations that are produced by affective names of colors and paints. "Art d’Ameublement” also refers to Erik Satie's Furniture Music (Musique d’ameublement)— a series of infinitely repetitive compositions meant to be background music for different occasions.
